Classification Talk:  Anthony Hemstad

Anthony earned his blue badge with a fascinating talk about his life and career. . . a combination of international trade and public policy, beginning with falling in love and marrying his Czechoslovakian wife.  Anthony’s Dad was Washington State Senator Dick Hemstad (the UTC building is named after him).  Anthony worked in Prague, Bratislava, Warsaw, and Budapest.  He has now settled down in the house in which he grew up in Olympia and is serving as a senior advisor to Duane Davidson, our Washington State Treasurer.  Sit next to Anthony whenever you can.  He has amazing stories to tell!

 Announcements

The Yelm Bowling Tournament is Monday, April 9th - 6 pm - Prairie Lanes

Carl Reder Award Nominations

Steve Bean announced that nominations are due for the Carl Rader Award by April 13th.  This award is the highest service award that we sponsor, named after Rotarian Carl Rader who “never said ‘No,’ and never quit working.”  Send nominations to either Steve Bean or Judy Blinn.

Program:  TVW Update with Renee Radcliff Sinclair

Gerry Alexander introduced Renee Radcliff Sinclair, President and CEO of TVW, who gave us front row seats to the history and evolving programming at TVW.  Renee is the fourth person to serve as CEO of TVW.  Our own Denny Heck was the first.  Before coming to TVW, Renee spent 14 years as a journalist, six years in the Washington State House of Representatives, and worked for Apple in government affairs and policy development covering 14 states.

On April 10, 1995, TVW began gavel to gavel coverage of the Washington State Supreme Court.  In January 1996 coverage of the hearings and floor action began for the House of Representatives; and in 1997 coverage began for the Senate hearings and floor action.  Almost any time of the day or night, Washingtonians can watch their government at work.

TVW documentaries are yearly winners of Emmy Awards, and some of the favorite shows include Inside Olympia, Impact, Legislative Review, TVW@Large, and The Decision.  I personally (Laurie Dolan) had the opportunity to do Capitol Classroom where I met 5 different times, over the internet, with a 5th grade classroom.  A really fun gig for this former elementary teacher!

Renee also showed some very fun, “older” footage, or our own Ralph Munro talking about his favorite places.

Mr. Snappy: Jim Phillips won Regal Cinema tickets
