Program: Washington State Treasurer, Duane Davidson

Anthony Hemstad introduced our speaker. Before being elected State Treasurer, Duane was Benton County’s elected Treasurer. He was elected four times (2002, 2006, 2010, and 2014). He is an actively licensed certified public accountant (CPA) and has served three terms as President of the Washington State Association of County Treasurers (WSACT). Duane has been a member of several Kiwanis Clubs in Eastern WA and Thurston County. Anthony has been working w/Duane since he was elected to the State Treasurer position. Duane shared about his life and the path of his campaign for State Treasurer.

He was born and raised in Carnation, WA. He graduated from Central Washington University, where he met his wife. His career started in the State Auditor’s Office, under Auditor Brian Sonntag. The audit work motivated Duane to run for Benton County Treasurer. Since his election to the office of State Treasurer, Duane lives most of the time in Olympia on a 40-foot boat in Swantown Marina.

Duane was about ready to drop out of the race for State Treasurer when his wife passed unexpectedly. However, his family convinced him to continue. His daughter was his campaign manager (she was 17) – it truly was a family effort.

As State Treasurer, Duane said he is focused on being as a-political as possible, even though the position is partisan. He doesn’t believe it should be a non-partisan position, though.

As State Treasurer, he is focused on the following initiatives:
-Financial Education – throughout the K-12 school system
-Stopping predatory lending to WA families (especially migrant workers)
-Reducing the State Debt – this will require managing the debt going forward and publishing a Debt Affordability Study for all members of the state legislature to review prior to next session.
-Documenting the current institutional knowledge of the Office of State Treasurer and hiring quality employees to replace the staff who will be retiring in the coming years.

Mr. Snappy: Sarah Clinton won $25 to Starbucks, donated by Preston Troy
