Program:  22nd Annual Dick Nichols Scholarship Awards Ceremony

Stephen Henderson introduced Dick Nichols, former County Commissioner and well-known sports broadcaster.  Dick thanked Rotarians for the honor of using his name in this program, and noted that the driving force behind the program is committee chair Stephen Henderson. He also thanked his wife Carolee who has attended all 22 events (even though he missed one due to a scheduling hiccup)!   Dick then addressed the fourteen scholarship recipients from seven high schools in Thurston County.  He described them as gifted, fortunate young people, and reminded them they have been given much and much is expected in return. Each one can make a difference through contributions large and small.  They are leaders and can inspire others around them.   Dick’s address was met with a standing ovation.

Teresa Dean described the portfolio and congratulated the students. Stephen Henderson introduced each student in turn and gave details of their academic, athletic and service achievements.  Along with uniformly impressive academics, many of the students had captained varsity teams in multiple sports (including Swiss wrestling!), and all had found time to give back to their community in many ways.  The breadth of fields that the young leaders will be making an impact in was evident from the range career goals mentioned - including petroleum engineer, law enforcement, neuroscience and pre-med - and the variety of colleges they will be attending - including UW Honors Program, Gonzaga, and out-of-state colleges such as Montana State.

Dick Nichols presented the scholarships and portfolios to the students who then shook hands with, and were congratulated by, each of the Club Presidents.
