Program - Karen Fraser -  “Water Supply in Thurston County”
Karen Fraser, on behalf of League for Women Voters, presented “Water Supply in Thurston County”.  Senator Fraser represents the 22nd Legislative District, which includes Olympia, Lacey, Tumwater, and northern Thurston County. She has held many senior leadership positions in the Senate including: Democratic Caucus Chair; Vice Chair of the Ways and Means Committee; Chair of the Capital Budget; chair of the Senate's administrative committee; and chair of policy committees pertaining to environment, energy, water, parks and recreation, shorelines, Puget Sound, and state employee pensions. She served on the Rules Committee and on many other policy committees.
Prior to serving in the Senate, she served four years as State Representative. She served as a local elected official for 15 years, including becoming the first woman mayor of Lacey, the second woman Thurston County Commissioner, and the first woman President of the Washington State Association of Counties.
Karen noted that the earth does have a source of new water so it is critical that we take care of what we have.  Of all the water on the planet, only about 1.5% is clean to drink and accessible.
Thurston County water sources are primarily from rainfall, and that is always moving underground, so when we have drought like has recently been declared by the Governor of Washington, the water supply drops.
With the projections for significant population growth in the county, water supply vulnerability will grow.  Key to sustainability will be decreasing the water usage per person and by far the least expensive option to increase water supply.
She pointed out that the Deschutes River is water short and there is considerable runoff from the highways into Capitol Lake causing further pollution.
The League of Women Voters will hold two water forums in the spring of 2020.  Watch for more details.
