Program: Music Mends Minds – presented by Amy Huggins of the Vashon Rotary Club.
Music Mends Minds (MMM) seeks to improve the lives of patients with dementia, Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, traumatic brain injury, stroke, and PTSD through the healing power of music, an area of scientific inquiry that has begun to garner the attention of the medical community.
The program started in Los Angeles by Carol Rosenstein.  Carol was searching for positive responses from her husband Irwin, who was diagnosed with Parkinson’s and early dementia.  Music reignited hope for the couple with positive results on Irwin’s memory, energy, and outlook on life.  Irwin found purpose in life from playing the piano, and they created a band along with other individuals suffering from mental health disease called The 5th Dementia.
Amy Huggins brought the MMM program to Vashon Island and has seen a strong response, with 45 people regularly attending the group musical rehearsals.
Amy strongly recommended that the Olympia Rotary Club start a MMM program and invited us to attend a MMM celebration on Tuesday October 17th on Vashon Island.
